Choosing a phone number for the WhatsApp Business API
Requirements
- You own the number and can access it during setup — it must receive a one-time code by SMS or voice call.
- Full international format (country code + number). No country restrictions.
- Not simultaneously active with another WhatsApp API provider.
Accepted
- Mobile numbers
- Landlines that can receive an international voice call for the OTP
- Virtual mobile numbers (voice-capable)
- Numbers already on the WhatsApp Business App — via Coexistence, keeping the app and chat history
Not accepted
- Short codes and toll-free/1-800 numbers behind IVR menus (unless the IVR can be bypassed for the verification call)
- Numbers that can't receive international calls, or need extra digits beyond international format
Common questions
Number on the consumer WhatsApp app? Delete the WhatsApp account on it first (Settings → Account → Delete), then register. Incoming messages during the gap are queued by WhatsApp and delivered after registration.
One number, multiple providers? No — a number connects to one API client at a time. Use separate numbers for separate departments if needed.
Changing numbers later? Treated as a fresh registration; plan for a number you'll keep.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a number that's already on WhatsApp?
If it's on the WhatsApp Business App, yes — connect it via Coexistence and keep the app working. If it's on the consumer WhatsApp app, you'll need to delete that account first (or use a different number) — save your chats before deleting.
Can I change my WhatsApp API number later?
Numbers can't simply be swapped — a new number means a new registration. Choose a number you'll keep long-term.
Can I still call and text normally from the number?
Yes. API registration only claims the number's WhatsApp identity; calls and SMS work as before.
